Trainee Nursing Associate pilot student data collection
Health Education England’s (HEE) Student Data Collection Tool is a nationally consistent collection of data covering students on health programmes in England, intended to inform healthcare workforce planning activities and facilitate the payment of Department of Health and Social Care Education & Training Placement Tariff to placement providers.
The Student Data Collection Tool now has an additional template to capture data for Trainee Nursing Associates (TNA). This became active for collection in July 2020, as part of a pilot collection.
The collection of this data will directly inform HEE TNA payments to employers and to report to the Department of Health and Social Care on TNA programme numbers.
Since its launch, several changes have been made to the TNA Collection, to reflect feedback received from stakeholders, and in particular the feedback received from Education and Placement Providers.
June 2021 collection changes:
- Placement activity data for TNA Apprenticeship programmes is not a requirement in the June 2021 TNA Data Collection. Education Providers should continue to submit placement activity data for Direct Entry programmes, because placement tariff is paid for these placements.
- Placement activity to cover 15 February to 4th July. Student activity data to continue to cover 15 February to 30th June: This is in response to feedback from Education Providers of the difficulty to submit data for half weeks.
- TNA ‘Employer Details’ section of the template now requires the submission of student names to support validation: This is in response to feedback from Education Providers and employers, this information would support the validation process, making it easier for the employers to validate the data submitted by Education Providers.
- Requirement for a unique course identifier: Education Providers to include a cohort unique identifier in their submission. This will enable HEE to link the data collections in a more robust way, which would enable more accurate attrition modelling to be undertaken. There is already a field in the collection template for a unique identifier, but now it is mandatory.
